Statement on Roe v. Wade
June 27, 2022
CANADIAN FEDERATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN (CFUW) STANDS WITH WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW), an organization founded in 1919 working to improve the status of women by promoting human rights, public education, social justice, and peace in Canada and abroad, is deeply concerned over the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which deprives millions of their right to abortion in the United States. The impacts of this decision will be disproportionately felt by those who already face barriers to reproductive and sexual healthcare access – those who are low-income, racialized, living in rural and remote areas, those with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ people. While abortion has been decriminalized since 1988 in Canada, this Supreme Court decision will have cascading impacts on women in Canada who live in provinces and territories where access to abortion remains inequitable. CFUW reaffirms its commitments to human rights, bodily autonomy, and legal, safe, and accessible abortion and stands in solidarity with women in the United States and around the world whose sexual and reproductive health rights have been violated or are in peril.
If you would like to contribute to resources that strengthen access to life-saving sexual and reproductive healthcare in Canada, consider making a donation to Action Canada for Sexual Health & Rights here or the Norma Scarborough Emergency Fund, a fund that covers the travel costs of those who need access to safe and legal abortion in Canada, here.
