Standing Committee on ADVOCACY

The mandate of the National Advocacy Standing Committee is to be a forum for CFUW members involved with advocacy issues in Canada. The committee assists with tracking current and emerging advocacy issues and provides leadership for national, provincial, and local action. The committee is responsible for the development and communication of CFUW advocacy-related procedures on behalf of the Board. The VP Advocacy chairs this committee and reports to the Board.

Three sub-committees work with this committee:

Environment and Climate Change

This Sub-Committee focuses member discussion on issues pertaining to the environment and climate change in Canada and globally and brings recommendations for action to the attention of the national board through the National Advocacy Standing Committee. On numerous occasions, CFUW has urged the Government of Canada to take vigorous and meaningful action to mitigate climate change.

Status of Women and Human Rights

This Sub-Committee focuses discussion on issues pertaining to the Status of Women and Human Rights within Canada and brings recommendations for action to the CFUW National Standing Committee on Advocacy. They focus on CFUW’s national priority of Equity and Social Justice, particularly regarding Gender-Based Violence, and on other issues of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion as they relate to the status of women and human rights.

Policy Book

CFUW is a grassroots organization that advocates for public policy based on CFUW adopted resolutions. The work of the Policy Book Sub-Committee is to continually enhance the value and use of the CFUW Adopted Resolutions Book. They routinely review the contents of the CFUW Adopted Resolutions Book, recommending the following: archiving outdated policies, identifying policies that need updating, and identifying policy topic gaps.
