The Honourable Charles Strahl
House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario, K1A 0A6

Re: Conditions for Aboriginal People in
Canada
Dear Minister Strahl:
The Canadian Federation of University Women/Fédération
Canadienne des femmes Diplômées des Universités (CFUW/FCFDU)
supports funding for programs to address inequities faced by
Canada's aboriginal peoples and programs that will redress the
imbalances that they face in their lives. Settling land clams and
meeting promises made in the Kelowna Accord good places to
start.
CFUW adopted this resolution at its Annual General Meeting in
Montreal. Quebec, August 9, 2008:
RESOLVED, That Canadian Federation (CFUW) urge the federal,
provincial, municipal and territorial governments to honour Crown
commitments and to develop and adequately fund, in collaboration
with Aboriginal organizations, balanced, holistic solutions to the
severe discrepancies in standards of living between Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal Canadians by:
- Actively negotiating to resolve outstanding land claims;
- Implementing a long term plan to remedy the critical shortage
of suitable affordable housing, including services infrastructure,
for Aboriginal Canadians, on and off reserve;
- Establishing and implementing a long term plan to enable the
graduation rate of Aboriginal Canadians from secondary and
post-secondary education and skills training to be similar to that
of non-Aboriginal Canadians; and
- Increasing the funding of Aboriginal health care systems and
setting specific targets to improve all aspects of Aboriginal
mental and physical health, including the reduction of infant
mortality, malnutrition, diabetes, substance abuse and
suicide.
CFUW looks forward to hearing how you plan to assist Aboriginal
Canadians.
Yours sincerely
Patricia DuVal, President, Canadian Federation of University
Women
